Why is the baby crying?

It is a difficult feeling to see your little baby cry. Over this, it is also difficult to reason out the exact reason why. Here are some of the more common reasons why she might be crying:
1. She is hungry. Yes, simple reason. Just give her feed and she would be okay.
2. She has wet or soiled her nappy. Check it out and change her nappy.

"She sleeps while on my lap but wakes up the moment I put her down"
3. She might have a little bit of gas in her tummy. Hold her in the upright position with her head resting on your shoulder and pat her gently on her back behind her tummy. She might burp and this would relieve her.
4. She has got colic. Most children have this in the first few months. This is more painful than gas in her tummy, but not a major problem. There are some traditional medicines which you may carefully administer.
5. Make sure that she burps after each feed by holding her upright and patting her back.
6. She has a cold. If she has a cold, she finds it difficult to breathe while she lies down. There are some traditional medicines which you may carefully administer. You could help by keeping the room a little warmer than needed. If she sleeps while you hold her, you might have to hold her in a position to get her to sleep while you too relax. DO NOT give her a bath on these days.
7. She might have a little twist in her upper back/neck area. Gently place her on one side and then on another side. If she cries in certain positions and not in others, this is confirmed. Sometimes, she cries while feeding on one breast but not the other. Traditionally, this is termed a 'sprain'. The following method is very effective and provides spontaneous relief.

Have a grown person to help you:

 i) Fold a thick bed sheet into two and spread it on a firm mattress.

ii) Place her close to one end of the bed sheet.

iii) Now you hold the two ends of the sheet that are

the baby and ask the other person to  hold the other two ends.

iv) Slowly lift the sheet so as to roll her on the mattress once

or twice until she reaches the other person. Now the

 other person does this.
STOP, your baby should be already laughing by now!

8. If she seems normal when she is awake, but cries when you try putting her to sleep, she is just wants to feel secure. Hold her for some more time and then gently lay her down.

9. She cries whenever she wants to urinate. This might indicate an infection or sometimes just heat. You need to:

  • Check if she urinates frequently enough. If not, she might have too much heat in her body and she has concentrated urine giving her a burning sensation as she urinates. Give her more water and other fluids and she should be okay. If she is not okay after 24 hours, take her to a doctor.

  • If she urinates frequently but cries each time she is about to urinate and calms down soon after she has done it, it might indicate an infection. Take her to a pediatrician.

  • If she cries to urinate while she sleeps but is quiet when she urinates while awake, she is simply disturbed in her sleep. Just hold her close while she cries. This is normal and she will outgrow this.
