Administering medicines
Some mothers are lucky because their babies take medicines easily and without too much of a fuss.
To many other mothers, it is a difficult job. To make things easier, here
are a few tips to be followed:
-
Use a dropper with a measure and take the dosage prescribed in it.
-
Place her on your lap and hold her head firmly with one hand. Place a big soft doll on
her so that she is not able to reach the dropper with her hand.
-
Holding her mouth open by inserting your ring finger between her jaws (fortunately she
has no teeth yet), drip the medicine (by pressing the dropper with the
thumb and index finger of the same hand) along the inside of her cheek.
This prevents her from deliberately coughing it up.
-
If you have to give her more than one medicine, give them all quickly one after another.
-
Soon after giving her the medicine, keep her upright close to your body with her head
resting on your shoulder. Distract by showing her something interesting and calm her down.
This would prevent her from throwing up the medicine by crying too much.
